Hey Shawn! So I recently have been getting left wrist pain at the base of my thumb (with a right handed swing). I think I have watched your videos enough to have a pretty solid grip, but I think I’m bowing my left wrist a bunch and actually putting too much pressure on that thumb at the top of my backswing. Just looking for some direction in what might be breaking down. Thanks!

Hey Ryan! Any sudden change of direction because of a fast transition that would cause the arm-club unit to collapse could easily do it. Mine used to occur when I was not going with my shots enough in the follow through and the re-hinge in the release would jab that same area you are talking about. Excess cupping means also that the other wrist is not hinging on the snuff boxes; so make sure the grip’s tone is solid enough to hold and not collapse under the pressure of the transition.

Correction: I think I have overly cupped wrists at the top, not bowed.

shawn: at 72yrs old between the training u serve up ,i.e. one leg drill ,diagonal stance hammer into doorframe, strong grip swing caddie and recently rypstick training
.my ball speed was 130 ,swing speed 90. to ball speed 133.6 and swing speed 92.8. also hitting 50 % of my fairways. so th all this came from ur teaching and the rypstick speed training for about three weeks so far.
    thx , shawn

This was a fun video Mark! So glad you are enjoying the process! Keep monitoring the effort level and stay away from strain, just continue to let the swing breathe and give yourself plenty of breaks to recover. Mu is a great resource for this and you should email him questions about a good blend of training and recovery and even proper sustenance. [email protected]

Hi Shawn. I really enjoy these videos. I haven’t been on much lately, to prevent overloading myself while going through this journey. In the few months I’ve been subscribing, I feel like I’ve made some great strides thanks to these videos and your guidance towards the correct videos to help with my struggles. Right now, I have two struggles. One is that I need to readjust my distances with my wedges. Everything in the bag is going farther and with the use of Arccos, I have a pretty good sense on most of my clubs, but due to the varying distances I use my wedges, the app isn’t very helpful (good problem to have and can be figured out with some range time, I just wanted to thank you for your teams good work). The other issue is dispersion on shots 70-120yards when I need to hold back some swing speed. This distance is my biggest problem in strokes gained. My three misses are left, right, and over shooting the green. The full shots with everything above the wedges aren’t perfect but I have improved dramatically and feel confident that it should continue to trend that way. I just don’t like taking full shots with wedges. Thoughts?
To answer your question in the video; Yes. I have learned how much is gained with a “light layup” swing. Nothing like aiming a 7w at a green from 220 (stock distance) only to have it fly over the green by 25 yards. Did I mention that I want to thank you? 😊

Wow, right on man! Amazing stuff!
see the 20-40-60 yard shot video we just posted; and get the middle and full pitch yardages with the 56-52 and PW as well as 9 iron shots and document those distances and use that on course instead of the full on wedges!

Such a good lesson. I really appreciate the fact that you always point me in the right direction. I confess that I haven’t taken this to the range yet, but I have been trying this out on the course with great success from 50-100 yards. One thing I noticed when doing this, was the stopping power on the green. WOW!

  • From Brad Hoffman on SUPER SLOW WIDE-RELAXED DRIVER

Hi Shawn! I have a question regarding something I’ve noticed in my own drives. With a very closed face (like I am driving a nail in the ground with the ACU straight in front of me) I would predominantly hit a fade. I attributed it to the fact that my takeaway was more outside. If I am intentionally trying to hit a draw, I would leave the face in the same condition, bring my takeaway more inside and would occasionally get a draw or a straight draw/hook. This was happening roughly for the past six weeks. So I focused more on a fade with my driver, as it was more predictable. Then attempting to hit the fade with what I perceived to be the same takeaway as what I had been previously doing, it was a mixed bag of snap hook/straight draw and planned fade. So I first attempted to open the face a little ((looking at the face with my ACU straight in front of me)from 10 o’clock to 11) attempting to keep the same outside takeaway, I would end up with a wild slice. Would it make sense to keep my club face closed the same amount for both fade and draw while changing ball position, takeaway, and release? I have Goldilocksed this for both and find that if I really exaggerate and focus on the draw release, I get the draw I’m looking for.

Hi Brad! Look at you go man, great stuff! You are dancing around it and we just need to clear up a couple things:
1-the swing is an arc for both fades and draws
2-we use body alignment to direct the flow of the momentum-arc in the direction we want to start the ball, then grip and club relationship as well as ball position need to match the visual and feel of how you want the ball to fly.

Then we allow momentum to track the arc in that direction to release the tee into that summersault (specific task in a specific direction with feel of momentum doing the job easily)
Looking forward to digging in at our next session! Keep doing what you are doing and get some more feedback and see if a couple patterns emerge!

  • From Benjamin Fournier on Arm Swing vs Body Turn

    Hi Shawn,
I visualize the golf swing as the arm club unit swinging on a vertical arc while the body turns on a more horizontal arc, is it correct ?
I understood that I shouldn’t let the arms follow my body rotation but it is still difficult for me to feel it in my swing
Maybe with the battering ram ? Do you have any other drills for me ?

    Thanks a lot ! Benjamin

My setup sloppiness is choosing a starting target height. No issue picking the starting line and IM. Picking a cloud or tree in the distance just seems to be harder to do than picking a ground level target like the edge of a green or bunker.

  • From NEEL KAMAL PURI on Braced Tilt

    Hi Shawn,
I’m trying to figure out how much I should bend forward so that my chest is over the ball. From what I can see, your stance seems to have a deeper knee bend (with your kneecap almost covering your toes when viewed from the side) and a more upright spine compared to mine, which has less knee bend and more forward tilt in the spine. I’m a bit confused about how to find the right balance of knee bend and spine tilt for my stance. Any advice would be appreciated!

The best thing to do is see DYNAMICALLY what your tendencies are; use the “perpetual motion drill series” and video yourself from down the line and see where the proper combination is for you. My set up at address mimics my impact position when I am sending grass clippings or divots towards my target. See #6 in the “kinetic chain facilitation and engagement series” and look at your posture through impact when sending grass clippings to a target.

  • From Krista Nabb on Grass Whip Training

My mom bought the Mehlhorn grass whip and I tried it out this past weekend.
I’ve been using the home hardware grass whip.

I think the biggest difference is the Mehlhorn is lighter, obviously has a smaller handle.
I can feel the release and width better on the Melhorn.
But I had some good feels to help me along with the ‘real’ grass whip.

    • From Shawn Clement on Grass Whip Training

Exactly! They are both awesome to use! The Mehlhorn whip is going to get you a better release in both directions with the perpetual motion drill and the regular grass whip is awesome to perform the REAL task of cutting grass and weeds!
