I interlock like your daughter. The one thing I have a problem with is the index finger being so stiff that it’s hard to space it the way she does or much at all. When I do the compression is 2x better. Is there a way to stretch my index finger to loosen it up?
Great question Eric! Yes, as you continue to work the “trigger finger” against the shaft to apply some nice pressure through the cut of the stem of the dandelion, it will stretch out the ligaments and it will get easier as you go! My left handed index finger had that issue and I was able to iron out the kinks nicely and they are both good now. See the original grip videos on premium at the bottom of the “fundamentals” list and see where we talk about the “knife the grip” like when you cut through think veggies in the kitchen!
Thanks for the response! That’s good news as I’ve been doing that for a couple days hitting into a net. Can’t believe the difference in the compression! My only problem is focusing on my trigger finger instead of my target so I gotta get that thing stretched out lol
I did’nt realise that I was pulling the club back with my lower hand until my two middle fingers were feeling pain to the ligaments there from improper use. I had to think of pushing the club back wide to eliminate that issue as ypu showed a wide take away. Also i have a cadet large glove and feel I am gripping too hard due to perhaps needing a smaller grip size. For some reason I got M4 golf pride grips because I liked the cord. Got me to thinking they might be too large for my sausage sized fingers. P0ssible? Also it causes we to figit with my grip after address. Need to set it and forget it. Love being able to revisit the videos, I see something new that I missed everytime.
I thought maybe I could have written your comment. My son calls my fingers sausages as well. I also have m4 grips and new ones I just put on. Xl cadet glove also and really am having an issue with my lead hand grip feeling comfortable.
Yes, definitely possible as when I had Mid sized grips for my large sized hands, I felt the same thing happen with my hands; like an ache in the joints after a while. Since I am back with my 4 wraps on standard sized grips, they feels great!
Shawn this was an excellent audio. Really helped blend some of the videos into one place. Particularly liked the Sav and Mu comments about the two tees. I also liked your comments on staying with the task as you have told me numerous times but hearing that you had the same issues really helped bring it home that it isn’t easy and just takes some practice. What I have found is I am pretty good at the range of just focusing on the task and then I get on the course and the distractions of the hole etc start to play with my mind. Really important to just do the task, the results will speak for themselves!
Hey Pat! Bryson’s release pattern is very much like what we show in our “lead hand release” “trail hand release” and “release fine tuning”. Bryson has simply gone the extra mile to get used to the feel of these grips so that it matches up with his way of thinking. I can tell you that Moe Norman played his whole career with an overlapping grip and only switched in his later years to accommodate Natural Golf to get compensated to suit their methods better.
Hi Shawn, This was an interesting video. It seems there were a few different pieces munged together. I don’t understand how you can initiate the coil of the kinetic chain without a stable point (attachment to the ground) so I suspect that there are a number of ways that people discuss initiating the swing but it really all starts with the planting of the rear heel. This is the same in all sports I suspect…throwing a ball requires the foot plant to start. The question I have is around order of execution. If I need to plant to initiate the coil of the kinetic chain and my ankle and hip are the only sources of rotation then it would seem that the heel plants and the hip begins to turn. That would provide the initial momentum to start the drawing back of the club without it being either a conscious movement or something I try to muscle through. Thoughts? It seems pretty clear that is how you swing so consistently.
Exactly! We have talked about how the golf swing is a dual kinetic chain and I wanted to bring back the importance of “getting ready to use the weight of the ACU (Arm and Club Unit)” to deliver the task. Loved Johnny Miller’s Heavy Momentum action and the timing of Jack’s and Gary Player’s swings which all respect how we engage that kinetic chain and mot sabotage it through manipulations to meet a ball. The videos that complement this one are “using the weight in the swing-axe drill with Savy” “throw the club” “pumping up the swing”,the “kinetic chain series”, the “Throwing series” and the “hammer drill” to name just a few.
I try so hard to be super still before I move to the backswing. I’m going to try some of these ideas to see if I can loosen up and get more flow. I can’t believe how amazing Mu’s movement patterns have become, he giving such a great Demo. Of course, Sav is a great demo model too but since she’s your daughter I expect no less. Nice outfit on MU, he and Sav are my favorite power couple now.
Great video. Especially the drone views. It really demonstrated the COMPLETE release of the club and how your head position stays behind the ball – but is allowed to move. My problem ( one of many ) is that I have trouble COMPLETELY releasing the club. Whether it be from my injuries, bad habits, or laziness I tend have the club stop just as it gets to my lead shoulder and it obviously reduces my distance. Fantastic job – keep up the heat work
Hey John! In the “target confirmation series” we talk about how the release feel, that snap of the trail hand over the lead hand in the direction you want to start the ball, that release feel is what you want to confirm you felt first and then backtrack the mind back to “how did I do with contact and direction?” So it’s 1-yes I felt the full snap where the G-forces of the club released me in the direction I wanted to start the ball and then 2-how was contact?
You are either in an attacking frame of mind or a determined “cool mad” state or in a flow state to accomplish this.
Ah! very good timing that video. Couple of weeks ago, I went to see the french golf whisperer (Ed Montaz), and boy, it was worth 6 month of lessons with my pro back home. But back on the course I have actually been struggling with starting my swing, I have that fraction of second where I think “I’m all setup, I have my intermediate point, the picture of shot, what do I do now?”. It seems that I just need to find a way of already be in motion. Will give that a try.
So my issue is what is that trigger to start my swing,
look at Matt Wolff and you can see what his trigger is 🙂
even in you swing Shawn you have a sight movement forward,
I have a problem that when I have tried that slight movement forward I touch my ball and it moves. So I’ve tried at address to have my club slightly back from the ball I usually hit ground first
Ok, good, I have seen this before many times and your solution is exactly what I saw in the video and in the “using the weight in your swing-axe drill with Savy” video. Start with:
“I feel the weight of the Arms and Club already pulling on my shoulder sockets towards the target at address-and I am getting ready to feel this experience past the ball and in the direction I want the ball to start” AND SEE how YOUR SYSTEM reacts to this command. Some will tap the feet, some will pump the legs (Tom Kite in the video) and some will do what I do (Mu has adopted that one and is swinging so much better too)
let us know what you come up with! 😀👍
Shawn,
The one leg drill is awesome. The increased balance in my swing has me hitting more solid shots. I love that balanced finish and the effortless power I feel. One unexpected result was this seems to have eliminated my occasional shank.
Thanks!
Yeah man! I know what you mean and the ability to keep support directly under the body’s Center of Gravity is greatly increased with this is why the old Shank gets eliminated easily with it. Great job man! 😀👍💪👌
Super.video Shawn. Love the drone view. The only issue with the drone view is that it loses the up/down motion. In all my shots I try to initiate with a small bump down using the legs. The hands press forward automatically. This ets up the kinetic chain and frees up the rotation. Zero manipulation. I’ve even been working on a similar micro move, comparatively, for putts since the momentum and throw are small. Way fewer pulls and pushes.
Manipulation has always been a big problem as well as ‘ ball is target’. Unless these movements occur my default is to pick up and manipulate.
The drone shots are really cool – a perspective that is unique and very helpful to see what is going on. Watching your setup from above is super easy to see. The best part IMO was watching the grass interaction with the perpetual motion swings – very cool stuff guys. Thank you!
