Hey Shawn, hope your doing well, do you get behind the ball when hitting the fade as well?

Shawn Clement

Hi Justin!
because you are playing the ball forward of centre for the fade, you are already behind the ball and you don’t want to pre-turn or need to pre-turn. Just brace against the left side of the target and use momentum to whip the club that way.

Justin Rushing

Ok thanks Shawn for clearing that up for me, finally got to go out and play a round since the lesson, we have a drivable par 4 that’s 274, always was about 30 yards short with driver, hit 3 wood and was pin high left of green, still managed to get par, still having a little trouble getting my hands to cross and release, kind of looks similar to Jordan Speiths swing in a way, but I’m definitely liking the swing technique.

Shawn Clement

Well that is a big step in the right direction! 👍👍

Hi Shawn,

Can you try to explain to me why I’m seeing more distance and control with the fade. I have a natural draw and just got tire of hitting one or two hooks per round. I lost a couple of tournaments last year because of this hook that shows up. I really committed to learning the fade this year and now I rarely try to hit a draw anymore. I hit a draw when the shot calls for it. On most tee shots I just aim left and fade back into the middle. What is don’t understand is the distance. I played Duran in Viera Florida today and this is actually the course I attended your clinic years ago. I have played here many times because my in laws live right down the street. I live in Atlanta now so I don’t get to play as much. Today I hit a fade on almost all my drives because most of the holes here mover left to right. What surprised me was the distance I was getting compared to the draw from I normally play. I don’t get it, what would cause a fade to go further? Is it because my draw was a result of a closed setup and bad alignment? I just feel like I can control the fade so much more. It either just holds its line or fades a tiny bit. It never goes left like a hook. I shot an 80 today and had 33 putts. I just couldn’t make any birdies. I feel like this was my best ball striking round ever. I picked my spot and then sent my momentum just left of it each time. So much fun today. I’m never trying to hit it straight again. I was really struggling before I subscribed to the premium channel again. Came in second in my first tournament after going back to your methods. Thanks again.

Thanks, I do feel more comfortable when I set up for a fade. Mainly because I know it’s not going left.

Hi Shawn, Really enjoying the content. I tried this out yesterday at the range and it was working well. I noticed on the draws that the ball was coming out a bit lower than I’d like. Especially the longer irons. Otherwise I was mostly on line and creating the draw shape I’d like. Should I tilt more if I’d like a higher draw? It could be the cold temperatures here atm, but I felt I was losing carry on 6 iron and below on draw shots. Thanks, Dan

Shawn Clement

Right on Daniel! This will bear a lot of fruit later! As for height, this is why fades and draws on the longer clubs end up going the same distance and the fade gets you more carry on low to medium height shots and then when you get really confident, YOU GET TO CHOOSE the HEIGHT you want to send the draws up into. Simply match the set up; which would have the ball less back in the stance and more centred and even a smidge forward for the very high ones. For Driver Draw, if you have issues with toe shots and pull hooks because you can’t seem to get all the way through, see the “great driver nugget” and the “diagonal stance series” which gives you more anatomically sound options! 😀👍

Daniel Pollard

Thank you Shawn. Much appreciated. This has helped the draws a lot and I feel confident with them now. Fade on the other hand I find trickier with the longer clubs. It feels like I come over the top when I try to chop the dandelion (and throw the club) to the left of my marker. I catch some well for straight fades, some I catch heavy and some slice (usually when I’ve been testing with opening the grip some more). Any tips and or videos to not come over the top when trying to fade?

Daniel Pollard

Having re-watched this video I may not have opened my stance enough on the fade…So I can at least try that next time.

Shawn Clement

Good, this is common; and we are never trying to “make the ball fade” with our swings; the set up creates the fades and all we want to do is “throw the club into the direction we want to start the ball. Backswing needs to match so see “how to match backswing to ball direction” and alignment must match as well otherwise you have to come over the top if the alignment is not left enough.

teniffog@gmail.com

Where are your feet lined up. Are they lined up at the pin or where you want to start the ball?

Shawn Clement

At the pin for a draw and in the direction you want to start the ball for the fade; fade the ball is forward of centre and draw the ball is back of centre. Ball position makes alignment. See “the goldie locks series” to learn how to predict set up and see fade fine tuning and draw fine tuning for more!

Hi, Shawn. Ball flight question. Context: on the range; driver, maybe 3 wood; attempting draw or perhaps neutral (to target line); happens only on occasion (and I don’t think I can reproduce consciously); good ball contact; wind not a factor. What I observe is: for about first 2/3 of flight path, the ball appears to shimmy back and forth in its horizontal plane, as if it can’t decide whether to spin right or left. And then, in last 1/3 of flight, the ball makes up its mind as to spin direction and ends normally. Of course, one just re-centers and goes on to the next attempt. And it must be only appearance, not actual spin. But am curious what produces the effect. A noticeably different appearance from ball flight where spin is more locked in from impact. I’ve looked up knuckleball flight for baseball, but that doesn’t seem to fit in golf context.

Donald Moir

Thanks. Helpful in absence of a flight monitor.
