Hi Sean, I’m a little confused. I’ve watched all the grip videos. The other videos advocate a neutral grip with a closed face that becomes strong dynamically. This video seems to advocate starting the grip strong. For me personally I would think it’s easier just to start strong and perceive it as hitting a nail to the target with a sledgehammer. Can either method work, or am I misinterpreting something?
Hey Denzil! The answer is like your instincts say:
Neutral grip-closed face=strong grip square face
everyone is different and perceived differently; what matters is when you deliver the task with a nice flow of “whippy momentum”, that your ball flies the way you want it to.
Thanks for communicating with such clarity the grip-club head relationship. I always wondered why the clubs looked closed at address with a neutral grip (the hockey stick was a great analogy for me as like every Canadian born in the 80s, hockey was mandatory haha . Combining this info with hitting/throwing to the side of my intermediate point I no longer feel confused about where my golf ball is headed. I have a 3-index and I feel like now it’s time for mastery instead of just hitting and hoping. I was so naive before. Thanks again!!
Awesome Ryan! You sound like you are on the right path! 👍👌💪😀
You are a 3 handicap Ryan and you got there hitting and hoping??! I think I need to work on my hoping 🙂 Great handicap and good luck getting further – best wishes from the UK, David
LOL, thanks David! Indeed I kind of did…In retrospect, using this new understanding I have gained from the team here, I actually just got very lucky in the sense that I had a higher probability of hitting the shot I wanted because I already had a strong grip and my stock shot was a draw, so I was naturally doing a lot of the fundamentals correctly (without knowing why I found the game easier than a lot of my friends); however, being naive works both ways, and there would be times when I would just completely mess up a shot (hit a block cut out of bounds when wanting to play a draw) and not know why either. Thanks to the team here I now have a game plan…I still hope, but I hope that I follow the plan now instead of hoping my ball will stay in play. I wish you the best as well, such a fun game! Take care.
Exactly! Stay on task in the direction of the flight plan over and over again and like the dart player who focuses only on the bull’s eye for an hour a day for 2 weeks he ends up 15% more accurate in the end. Success becomes inevitable after a while! 👌👍😀
I have news for you David! 75% of the tour is like that! 😝😝
Hi Shawn, do you have any experience or perspective in regard to double overlap grip? I moved to this grip a little while ago with the hopes of reducing pushing to early with the right arm, but now I realize that that motion will always happen when/if I’m focused on the ball as opposed to the target. Now that I understand using gravity and throwing toward the target, I’m curious about moving toward your prescribed grip, just wanted to get your thoughts on double overlap compared to your grip. I feel like double overlap gives be two fingers to sling clementine with, as opposed to one finger.
Hey Adam! I have a video on that very subject! See “stop pushing with the right side” right here on premium!
lol, cool! Just watched it, thanks Shawn!!
Hi Shawn ! So much information here it’s getting crazy ! 🙂 My grip adjustments (stronger) similar to Sav’s has really helped with my driver as I’ve added a good 15 yards of carry. But somehow I seem to be hitting my irons FAT more often? Could you offer some ideas as to what is going on from a grip perspective ? Doesn’t a stronger grip encourage more Lag ? Thanks so much !
The stronger grip does mot guarantee more lag; that is what focus is for!!!
If say your task is like “task update” or “kinetic chain facilitation #6” or “throwing the club to the direction you want to start the ball with the “goldie locks predictions” that the ball is in the way and will go that way BECAUSE THE GRIP IS STRONG ENOUGH, then you get lag, power, solid contact and everything you want in a great shot!!
Shawn
This grip technique is hands down the best I’ve ever seen. Mu you give a different perspective with the say, “Cooking with rice”. This I will add to the training. Thanks.
