Morning Shawn , I understand the string grip. My question , as I make ball contact is the right palm as a righted handed golfer face up? This position seems correct with both bones lining up in the direction of my target .
Logically, yes but for a fraction of a second as the weight of the club will release the anatomy like in the “release” videos; you want this to happen past the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball and not at the ball; but if the grip is too strong, you will feel the need to prevent it from releasing and you don’t want that. For many, they will go hard strong and closed face and then as they get better at the release, they need to back off the strength of the grip…
Thank you
Hi Shawn. Should we have the club face closed when we take our grip?
For the vast majority of golfers. Yes! Many exceptions though; and the way to tell for sure is when you can confirm your task has made it all the way through with ease in the direction you want to start the ball and the ball is going straight or curving the way you want, then the grip-clubface combo is good. See “draw fine tuning” and “fade fine tuning” and the “goldie locks series” and “predict contact” videos.
I keep coming back to this video. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. When I make my transition move, I have a ton of pain in my lead thumb. Idk if it’s my wrist hinge, my grip, or what. I don’t actively hinge my wrist on the way back. I mostly feel the hinge after transition, but the force of the club against my lead thumb really hurts, unless I tape my thumb up like it’s broken 😭
Try the “shawn’s favourite drill” video and tell me how you do with that drill please?
Shawn
I couldn’t find that on the site. Any other name I should search for?
Hi Jeremy. I noticed Shawn has 2 favourite drill vids- one for driver and another for irons. Also check out the Savy’s bonus grip video. Its fantastic and falls right inline with the strong grip benefits. Having the clubshaft essentially resting on the index finger (instead of the thumb) was a game changer for me.
Right here Jeremy!

Hi Shawn, is there any reason why you switched to the interlocking grip? I have used the overlapping grip since I started playing golf more than 40 years ago. After watched your grip update video, I tried the interlocking grip for a few days. However, some reason, my trail hand (right hand) little finger hurts when I hit balls with the interlocking grip. I have a small hand and always am having hard time to release a club. I have not tried the ten-finger grip yet. Do you think the ten-finer grip might improve the clubhead speed and the release of a club for a senior golfer? My driver clubhead speed is about 84 mph.
Hey Sam! Sorry I missed this one!
I am back with my overlapping grip; stay with that! 👍👍
Seems like ever since I switched up my grip to the knife grip I went from pull hooks to fades, sometimes a slice. Do I just need to tweak the strength of the lead hand to adjust ball flight to reduce the amount of fade? I’m a new member and haven’t navigated the site too much. I’ve been wanting to make sure I have the grip down first before moving on unless you recommend something else.
Hi Blaine! So you saw Grip and Grip part 2 and now see “important grip update” video and then see all the “release” videos to allow the g-forces in the swing to place or release your anatomy in the swing to make sure you ARE NOT IN CONTROL. 😝
Then see “fade fine tuning” and “draw fine tuning” for the complete understanding.
