Shawn,
Such a great message. I am traveling, but can’t wait to get back and play with this. You nailed it here. The flying right elbow is my nemesis too.
Right on Russell! Let me know how things go!
Shawn
Thanks, Shawn. I like what you suggested about the right elbow being a bit more vertical such that it will comfortably support the club at the top (the swing will be on plane by naturally). My question is that many coaches out there encourage people to flatten the swing path (not always explain why or what they are trying to achieve? Consistency? Speed?) but I don’t seem to recall you ever advocate such, is it mainly because the more upright swing is less harmful or more natural to the amateur’s body?
I have this question hanging on my head for quite some time now. I wish I know the answer.
By the way, right after you mentioned the flying right elbow, I started to realize that Bubba Watson is the extreme case of that. I thought I just wanted to point it out. For the record, the flying right elbow doesn’t work well for me at all.
As always, love the wisdom you teach and how you teach 🙏🏻
Hey Tristan!
Time to do a video on that; title:
“Why are teachers teaching to flatten out the swing”?
Because they see so much over the top;
WHY ARE WE SO MUCH OVER THE TOP?? BECAUSE WE ARE TRYING TO HIT THE BALL AS WE ABANDON THE TARGET SEARCHING FOR POSITIONS ON HOW NOT TO COME OVER THE TOP.
The dog has been chasing it’s tail on this forever and it is very tired!
So guys like George Gankas, although he teaches a proper full hip turn in the backsing, is still BADLY STUCK on positions in the downswing to combat this PERCEIVED DISEASE of over the top and too steep coming down.
Sorry about the bold words, I want other members to see this comment and to get confirmation pf what is out there;
Make sense?
Shawn
Shawn, I really like how you characterize this as the “perceived disease” (or perhaps a symptom of swinging at the ball). Thank you for helping me clearing this in my head! Look forward to watching that new video on your channel. All the best!
I love this comment Shawn and thank you Tristan for asking as I’ve wondered the same thing. I’d love to see a video Shawn on this topic, I’m sure it would hit home with a ton of people.
Shawn,
Another great video – thanks! I was just curious about your opinion of the teaching of Chuck Quinton from Rotary Swing Golf. Do you find his teaching compatible with Wisdom in Golf?
Thanks in advance and your teaching has transformed my game completely!
Chuck is a very positional guy; he does not understand that we are Pinnochio without the strings;
If he looks at a swing, he will focus on “perceived defects in swing positions” that don’t fit what we see in tour players.
If we presented brain scans of images that pros have in their minds before they pull the trigger, they would be different than whatbwe see in people trying to hit specific positions.
Find a task that lights you up both mentally and physically and get good at that! The positions will come all by themselves!
Shawn
YES< exactly as I thought. No focus or even mention about the task and the target and the height and shape. No 'plan' for the task at hand.
Thanks for the reply and the confirmation….looking forward to continued improvement and enjoyment!
Shawn you should get off using Vimeo. The videos start off being fuzzy with auto. You have to then select the 1080 0r 720 to get clear plus you cannot do slow motion with them. When I watch on youtube they are almost always sharp.
Hi Shawn, great reminder on the grip. Will make sure to check and correct if necessary.
Interestingly, you mentioned the position of your right elbow tends to fly off as you ‘collapse’ that way. Now you have it tightly tucked by your side as you complete the bs. I have the same problem.
My question is: Does this ‘tucked in’ position a function of a mechanical correction? Or you were able to correct this by matching your backswing to your intended task? Is it a mechanical thing or a feel thing?
Thanks!
Sandy
Very good Sandy!
It is both a FEEL within the task;
Football drill videos in premium will show you the way and I combined this with hitting fades a bit more often;
Shawn
Thanks Shawn! Got it. Will check the football drill video and see how I can apply it. Thanks for the great video!
