Shawn! For timing of this release, if my tendency in the past has been to open up too soon (likely defaulting to the ball) can you feel that the release happens behind you? In reality it doesn’t, but the intent to sort of start the push / pull release (we need a name for this, I’ve never seen an instructor explain this and I think it’s crucial info!) from the top, especially with longer clubs, my body reacts to that release intent and gets out of the way
Previously I’ve interpreted “get out of the way” as the body turning then the arms swinging through. Feeling the hands work in this manner sooner naturally gets my body out of the way as a reaction because I’m trying to sweep the dirt out there into the picture or fling the lacrosse ball to the target.
Hope that rambling Q makes sense!
Correct! If my intent is to let the weight of the club release my arm anatomy; in the direction I want to start the ball past the IP, then the brain must organize the engagement of the kinetic chain to allow for this to happen. To think about using the hips to manually clear is throwing a big monkey wrench into the spokes of this self preserving wheel!
I’m in the same boat as Mathew, except the casting a fishing pole task is for me. I’ve seen this video numerous times, and I never thought I should be consciously doing the push/pull motion with the lead hand and trail hand. I feel like the release has been my biggest weakness, but would occasionally get a desired ball flight with a very closed club face/strong grip paired with the right swing plane. Last night while practicing on the course I had this epiphany after watching this video (again) hours before.
That being said, once I start getting a feel for this, does it remain a conscious effort? Or do I just work on it consciously until I get the feel and let the subconscious take over?
Great question Brad! Plug it into the prediction process: you are about to let momentum release you into the direction of the intermediate point; when you do, does it feel like the grip and club relationship will compress the ball into that direction and get the ball to curve in the air the way you want of does it feel too weak to hold or trap the ball into that picture?
Thank you. Trying this out on the course yesterday took a bit of focus on that aspect, but it greatly helped close the club face. I have thought that I was letting momentum release me as my wrist hinge seemed to be present, but I am thinking I was missing that anchor, despite all the lead hand and trail hand release exercises.
Very possible! See “bolted and centred” and check out the downhill shots and the one leg drill for a braced anchor and the uphill shots and ball below feet for the trail foot anchor!
The suggested videos are on my list of must watch. Thank you.
The interesting thing is that in the 20, 40, 60 yard shot video you mention it working with full swings. I often use that swing in par 3s when I want a low flighted wedge and use it up to a 7 iron. I have a hole at my home course where there is about a 60 yard wide corridor with OB on both sides. I often use that swing from the video with my 8 iron which is typically a 165 yard club with roll out, but end up with 180-190 yards. I feel like that swing really helps with my release as I had a similar feeling when I was working on the push/pull release. This ah ha moment has me thinking of the correlation between the two videos.
BRILLIANT!!
Brad you are my spirit animal. I was dragging the strong grip and using some weird body motions to get the out to in path. Always led to blocks and hooks w driver. Manageable w irons. This has really generated some extra pop but more importantly has tightened my dispersion. Cast it from the top “out there” and let the hands provide leverage against each other. Very powerful feeling!
*in to out path
I feel really silly right now
So the lead hand effectively turns on the brakes so the trail hand can add the speed through impact? The wrist shot analogy really clicked with me. You could incorporate this easily into the throwing tasks too. Almost pretending it’s an under arm lacrosse throw and you’re trying to fling the ball off the club face towards the target, w that lead hand stopping and letting the trail hand really fire against a firm left side.
I’ve always had both hands working in the same direction.
Backswing the trail hand would put the brakes on then?
This is really cool and seems to make a lot of things click
Aren’t you glad I’m back w these questions Shawn 😂
Spot on with EVERY POINT! 👊👍🔥😀
Well that is new information for me ha. I’ve struggled with thin shots and occasionally dragging the handle, using the lead hand a brake and the trail hand as the gas pedal through the ball to the target is awesome!
I’m going back through all the fundamentals and this one jumped out! Any other good follow up vidoes to this one? Thanks!!
Yes! Important release update!
Hi Shaun, my right arm forearm doesn’t rotate due to an old injury. Broke radius and froze in that position. Would your advice be different in this case. I can only rotate forearm half way
The key here is to let momentum release YOU (your anatomy) into the direction you want to start the ball. Whatever is missing to get your flight, do it with the closing of the club face before hand. See “goldilocks series” as well as “draw fine tuning” and “fade fine tuning
Love this video!! I think while practicing my swing at home with out a ball I would forget about the real impact of hitting a real ball. Game changer in my mind now knowing the difference between swinging with out a ball and anticipating the collision and compression when the ball is in the way of my swing.
