hi shawn, normally i play with loose arms and my only motor are my legs . sometimes i use also my shoulders together with my legs. Is it a combination of the two or should i use only my legs?
the shoulders are just sitting on the rib cage and are strapped into position. They don’t do anything but support the arm-swing. See ‘arm swing vs body turn” video
Great video, the camera view at the end was helpful. It would have been useful to have an overview of the hole at the beginning so I could visualise your flight plan.
Shawn,
Yesterday, I used the Orange Peel training aid. It forced me to experience a full rotation. I observed greater club speed and a low effort high velocity swing. In addition, you can practice uphill, downhill, below the feet and above the feet shots. The device is large and not really portable so i begin to think of how I can accomplish the same feeling with what you teach. I thought of the feet together drill and one leg drill. In my experience, I get greater rotation and swing speed with the one leg drill. Is the Orange Peel a worthy investment?
David
Shawn,
I hit the 7 iron 50 yards further this morning with the one leg drill. It was amazing getting through the ball. I will add this drill for now . The orange peel will be a good add on to practice in different positions.
My swing low point is always where my eyes are looking. How do I get my brain to get around that? If I’m not looking at the low point then my brain doesn’t know where it will be on the down swing
EX: On my drive, if I setup like you (driver “far” behind the ball), I need to look at where the driver is before starting the swing and use the ball/tee as intermediate point to hit a descent drive. If I look at the tee, my bain will bring my arm/club unit to the tee on the down swing (brain loosing low point and ground reference) and all bets are off.
With my irons, my divots (if any) are always under the ball or a tad before. Never after the ball but I still hit 170yds carry with my 7 iron that plugs and stop dead on the green.
I believe that’s the reason why I can’t hit fades and that all my shots have a draw tendency.
Very good feedback! First time I hear it this way and it makes a lot of sense! With Driver, I have had some players look at the centre of the stance in anticipation of the low point; together with the prediction process, there is no reason why you could not do this! Same for iron shots; looking at a spot an inch in front of the ball and predicting if the low point is there during the swing, that the ball will get compressed in the direction you are letting the momentum go. Fantastic feedback man!!👌💪🤛😀
Hi Shawn. Here’s some feedback after going to the range and playing a round. What I described above about the driver is definitely the way to go for me. I can really feel and predict impact and direction before initiating the back swing.
For the irons, blindly looking at the top or back of the ball works for me. That way I’m able to focus on compressing the ball in the proper direction on my way through.
My biggest issue is that I’m unable to bring that relax state and focus that I have at the range to the golf course. My brain just don’t what to let go.
The key for the golf course is to confirm the prediction process before you allow the swing to compress through that ball; if you feel that when you let the weight of the arms and club compress through the ball in the direction you want it to go, that the ball will start on that line and curve in the air the way you pictured it. Then it is possible to let the swing do its thing!
Thanks for the reminder, that’s the bit that was missing. My last golf game went a lot better.
In your latest chip video, you said to Sav to make her chip movement a bit more to the outside like a fade swing in order to cut through the stem. Does it mean that you should feel like your swing path is a bit from Outside to In when doing a fade in order to brush the ball? I’ve been struggling a lot with fades and I was under the impression that the swing was the same and only the face angle and ball position alone will make the ball fade or draw.
The backswing needs to match the direction you want to start the ball; for someone who has a tendency to take the club too inside in the backswing, the proper takeaway that would match, even for a draw would “feel” outside but would be far from “being” outside.
I have to say your method of teaching and general golf philosophy are incredible. I committed to your instructional videos completely and cannot believe the difference it has made. Having now shot multiple rounds in the 70’s after making a major swing change following a long a golf hiatus due to COVID is just unreal. I feel like I am truly playing golf for the first time (and it feels so easy, intuitive, and athletic) so thank you for doing what you do. I recently watched a video where you discuss the “release” on the target side of the ball and focusing on the rehinge that occurs at the end of the follow through and how this is a great swing thought to ensure we don’t revert back to “hitting” the ball. It was a great video but now I can’t seem to find it again. Might have been target confirmation series, or arc blur, or a release video? You have so much great content that its sometimes hard to recall where these little nuggets are kept. I will be sure to make it a favorite video if you can point me in the right direction. Thanks again.
At a recent fitting with a 7 iron the distance was relatively short with tremendous spin and height on the ball. The launch angle was consistently above 24. I placed the ball back in my stance and saw a small reduction in spin and launch angle. I guessed that the two tee drill would help however in this video it seems to have to do with the wrist angle and timing of the release. How does one at home determine if the angle on attack is downward and how does one improve it?
Hi David! You simply choose the height you want to deliver the 7 iron on; then use a nice flow of unstoppable momentum low and through with ball back like you did for lower shots.
In the audio clip of this video your description of Larry is virtually identical to my experience. The Orange Peel gave me the feeling of what is like to explode through to the other side with little effort. In watching this video you tell Larry to keep the yellow. What did you mean? Hopefully, I can incorporate this into my workouts. I did watch the tilt, turn and swing video. The position of your feet are the same as on the Orange Peel. If I can get in a bunker with a block of wood with specific spot as a target good things could possibly happen.
Hi Shawn, I just played the best 9 holes of my short golfing career this past Friday. I made solid contact with every iron shot that I had! I noticed that after I chose my intermediate point, I focused my eyes more in between the ball and the IP, instead of the blade of grass directly in front of the ball. This seemed to allow me to ensure that my club hit the ball first, and traveled over the IP. Is there any reason why you may or may not recommend this? I don’t want to form any bad habits and would like to change this if it’s not what you’d recommend. Thanks for your great teaching! I really enjoy every video that I watch.
Stick with what you are doing!! You are predicting and staying with your task nicely and that is what counts! Way to go and thank you for the great feedback, this will help many others!
This reminds me of my time at the clinic and is extremely helpful. Like the comment below I can relate better to this instruction as opposed to trying to duplicate what I see on the other video. This grass practice provides the immediate feedback I need. The divet tells me exactly what I did so when you are not there I can still learn quickly. Currently, I am doing tons of drills only to find that I am doing them correctly and having to try an undo the bad habits. I am lucky to have a huge grass facility. If I can combine the training from this session and the session with Larry my swing will finally evolve.
Thank you. Thank you. Reviewed this video last night. Shot 73 today. Three better than my age. What a thrill at age of 76. You are a great teacher, without a doubt.
Shawn
excellent video, your chipping technique is the best I’ve used in the 65 years I have played this game. But, most of the heavy rough chips and pitches are from uphill lies. Please do a video on uphill shots. Thank you
great presentation, really illustrates the conditions and the solutions. On up hill lies play same shots letting momentum going up the slope off your front foot?
Not off front foot; just back of centre with wider stance scenario like the demo of ball position that Savy did with 3 different widths; because you need to follow the slope, the weight is on inside of back foot, with hands hanging forward. Do the PMD and see where it cuts grass and you will notice that it is not towards front foot at all…😀👍
Great video. I find is easy to “think” about swinging towards the target, but find it overwhelmingly difficult not to “hit” the ball. And keep defaulting to the ball.
This is why you need to adopt a solid task to focus on; the task gets you through the ball and into the direction you want to start the ball. When you look down and see a task to deliver, you are good to go. If you look down and see a ball to hit or “not to miss”, you are TOAST. SEE “task trumps everything” and “top 3 tasks” to start!
