I seem to make decent contact with my irons, but rarely take a divot. I feel that I may be leaving some distance on the table. Any suggestions on how to correct this?

I probably need more practice. These are new irons that I got after testing a bunch of models on the simulator. Thanks.

Hi Shawn,

I was practicing to predict contact and cutting grass as I’m throwing the club. But I still have trouble contacting the grass properly. Should I be picturing, throwing the club back, then the cutting of the grass at the club’s low point (several inches in front of the ball), then throwing the club forward? Also, I’m able to see the blur of the club without the ball but I seem to lose track of tracking the blur once the ball is laid down.

Thanks,
Calvin

Hi Shawn, I was working on fine tuning my predictions for my irons and woods, as last round out I had some fat contact show up on extremely wet fairways (with all the darn rain we’ve been getting in Montreal!) and my ball striking was exposed.

I noticed in re-watching this video, that I may be misinterpreting the correct way to “lower the machine” after my practice throws above the ball. I consciously observed that I have been lowering mostly by increasing knee flex, which I believe might be bringing my low point way back. After watching the video, it seems like your knee flex does not change at all from practice throw whiffs, to tops, thins and so on. Can you explain the proper way to lower the machine? Should it be mostly from the waist up like a crane lowering the wrecking ball?

Thank you,
Dario

Extremely helpful Shawn!
Have only recently subscribed but already am ridiculously excited at the prospect of introducing significant changes to my game!
At this point just to say that occasionally (when i have remembered to do this and usually only in practice) i have found it very helpful to imagine I am not trying to hit the ball, but rather an imaginary one 3-4” ahead.
As someone who is plagued with inconsistency of fat and thin shots and coming from too much inside (and pushing shots badly to the right-usually lost or in trouble!) could i trouble you please to direct me to any specific videos covering these points?
Many thanks
Regards
Ian

Hey Shawn, this may sound weird, but on iron shots I hit the ball 1st but my divots are like 2inches deep just passed the ball? I feel like I’m heaving the club in the backswing, getting the ground with my legs, then throwing to the mind picture! No distance loss but the greenskeeper can’t be happy!
