Hi Shawn I notice your release is very different to Sav and Mu’s. Your release is very fast and sav and Mu’s is slower yet they hit it as far and further. What is the reason for this and is one better than the other? Or more consistent than the other? I feel like tour pros lean to your style of release more.

Shawn Clement

They are both out there; every human body has their strengths and it’s their brains that determine what limb will do what when performing the task of delivering to the target; Zack Johnson and many others release like Sav and Mu, where as I am more like Paul Goydos, and Bubba. I have stopped a long time ago to try and force golfers into molds and just nudge them into executing their tasks freely and observe ball flight and then adjust GOLDIE LOCKS STYLE to find THEIR middle. Have you seen our “goldie locks series?”

Lenny Stevens

Thanks Shawn yeah makes sense. Sometimes I learn by what others are doing and than look to see what I’m doing as the task I’m giving my body isn’t working. I’ve seen “goldie locks series”

This is one of my favorite videos Shawn (hard to pick, you have so many greats). I like how you emphasize the release going back and through, and it’s great to see you miss left when you use too much effort (this way we can understand why this is happening to us). Two things I’m currently focused on is giving it time before starting down (using gravity or the weight of the club) ….and very importantly for me…consciously releasing going back. It’s so easy to do this with perpetual motion, but when starting from a static position I really have to think about this, and do this with effort (even more effort with driver vs iron). Is this a common issue for folks? Seems like the importance and awareness of this cannot be underestimated.

Shawn Clement

Yes, this is a good solid tree you are barking up! The PMD shows the way to what the backswing needs to be to have that full kinetic chain releasing into the direction we want to start the ball; but then, when we focus on that feel of that “momentum already there” and taking us into that snap towards that window where we want to start the ball, the brain finally figures out where the backswing needs to be to get that.

Hello Shawn,
Thank you for the swing analysis and following your advice I watched this video and did my best to use the drills during today practice session.. That was mind-blowing. I hit the ball further and more consistently with most of the clubs of the bag. My main issue was with the 3 wood with which I was sometimes topping the ball even when it was on a tee. I need also a firmer grip to make sure that the club face is not going all over the place. Once you feel the move the challenge is to trust this feeling and swing freely without trying to steer the club. It will be a real breakthrough if I can bring that to the course.
Many thanks
Christian

Very good! Exactly, the grip must stay intact on the club so that the g-forces can release the anatomy fully and completely! If the hands come of the club at any point, all bets are off as the club can no longer works it’s magic on you; which means that instead of letting the club release you, you are fighting something and going against the grain trying to make things happen. Use the perpetual motion drill and the “kinetic chain facilitation series” to monitor how gravity releases you and how the grips stays together during the swing and during the task of whipping divots towards targets!

Hello Shawn,
I have been very inconsistent in efforts to hit a consistent fade, with often times getting:
1-double cross and ball goes left (right handed golfer) with a slight draw…
2- or a straight ball to the left of target even after using a slightly “weaker” strong grip …
3- or an uncompressed weak over fade/weak slice with a too weak grip.

I have a good intermediate point and my swing path is slightly to the left of it after watching the blur. If I am understanding this video correctly I should actually be predicting myself or feeling a slightly later full release….later than a draw.? I have not been doing that….

I have no problem drawing the ball, it is my fade that causes problems on left to right required shots…

Thanks,
Jim K

Shawn Clement

The fade release is later as the ball position is farther forward and the alignment is left of target; so you will naturally release later and that is all it takes; stay with it! A great task for the fade is to let momentum saw the stem of the dandelion from heel to toe.

Hi Shawn, I have a problem with sometimes using too much effort or rushing which makes me push down on the club with my dominant hand (right-hand). This becomes even more problematic in high pressure situations when the adrenaline is higher. How can i fix this and be more consistent with not using so much effort?

Shawn Clement

This means you are out of position and getting ahead of the ball in the downswing; which means you are abandoning your focus. When this happens, it’s like the ball goes way back on the stance and you have to hurry up and hit the ball before you miss it! See “tilt mile markers” and “contact mile markers” to feel what its like to stay with your task!
