Shawn,

Another little golden nugget in here when it comes to grip pressure. The only way I can feel like I am whipping to target is to have all the grip pressure in the three fingers of the lead hand. The right hand is just along for the ride and to support the club, especially the thumb and index. Sort of like I am going to throw the club but I have just enough pressure that it doesn’t leave my hands. If I start getting too much pressure in my dominant hand it quickly goes from “throw” to “hit” leading to pulls left and flares right.

Just to follow up, I made two changes today, (1) held the club more firmly with the lead hand and (2) did the 20/20 head tilt. Previously I was getting 230-240 yds carry with range balls, today I was 250-260 with these two changes. Perhaps I was doing something else as well which helped but these are the only 2 conscious changes I made. So – getting there … thanks Shawn.

so far the changes are still working. Also I decided to literally adopt what you say and do in your videos; e.g. I say to myself “out of the way; out of the way” on my swing. This helps me get my hips turned , lol. Also it gives a good un-rushed tempo. My driver distance is creeping up.

One other thing; your visual of the ‘battering ram’ seems to work very well with the irons. I’m not confident enough with it yet to use on a course but its something to work on.

Hi Shawn. I am struggling with a couple of issues re grip and release;
1. I know I am whipping it very well with the irons and okay with the driver but I find it impossible to keep the club handle from moving around in my hands;
2. if I hold the club tightly to try to prevent it from moving around I cannot feel the clubhead
3. when I whip the club, esp. the driver, it feels like it wants get away from me, this is pretty frightening and i’m sure it gives my body counter-productive feedback.
4. Am I supposed to be thinking about grip pressure in only certain fingers? If so, please describe in detail.
5. I wonder how you or Matt would describe your grip pressure when you are whipping the driver at max freedom and speed.

Great Video and I”m glad you added it to the grip series. Making it clear what fingers add pressure really made it hit home for me and was something I could take action on right away. As a new member I also wanted to say how much I am loving your approach. I have been looking for a teacher I click with that uses Gabriel Wulf’s concepts. I was really happy to see you mention her in a video! Hallelujah, I think I’m gonna like it here!

I used to have a very light grip pressure thinking it would allow my hands to be quicker. But I did have some times when I thought I was going to lose the club and throw it. Your videos suggest a tighter grip so I went to the amount of pressure I would use to pound nails with a hammer. But in the last three weeks I have worn holes in two new gloves. What is causing that, too much or not enough pressure? What percentage pressure do you use Shawn?

mick10@shaw.ca

thanks; good video. I also found this one, in case anyone else is having this problem. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GUQkd0Hk60U

so it looks like everything (for me) comes down to the lack of a full hip turn, which I cant seem to solve on the full swing with a ball in the way.

mick10@shaw.ca

okay, didn’t know you could do that. I dont know if it is feasible to do FaceTime at the range, if that is what you are suggesting. I’ll send you a p.m. when I think I’m ready for that. Thanks

Shawn,
I’ve never had a blister on my lead hand before now. Since using your grip and a firmer grip, I have a blister at the base of my pinkey. Any thoughts, is this ok?

Thanks
David
