    Shawn
    You finish your swing high almost over your head; like Arnold Palmer, versus over your left shoulder.
    Is that something we should strive for to be better ball strikers.

      Depends on your dominant side! My right side is dominant and on my left handed swing, I finish with the club across my back;
      It is just the body’s way to dissipate the excess; just keep releasing out to the target and see what you like best as a finish! The last 2 videos in premium have some great info on this!

    Hi Shawn
    Would that explain my high right to right miss with the driver when trying to draw it, and my unintentional straight fade when I really stay with my task to target shot?
    With that set up it should be a lot easier to stay with right edge of intermediate and stay with the target.
    Does it also apply to fairway woods and the long iron draws?
    Thanks

      Hi Fred!
      Exactly! Anything hybrid or fairway wood that needs to be in front of center for draw would benefit from this set up!

    I am brand new. 8.5 index but very inconsistent and historically a very overly analytic positional player; something about your teaching method clicked with me. I watched the blur and throwing the club and hit incredibly well on the range. As funny as it sounds in the process of trying to hit the ball I think I have historically not only missed the blur but often don’t remember focusing on the ball. I am going to take some time going through the videos the next few weeks. My only question is it seems like there is a bit of an up and done vertical motion to your swing. Am I seeing that right and is that ok?

      Awesome and yes you are seeing that and it is more than ok, it is ABSOLUTELY ESSENTIAL to a complete golf swing; we are gravity geniuses!
      Watch the kinetic chain series and then see my oldie but goodie videos on youtube called “horse shoes and lassos shawn clement” and “feet together and one leg update shawn clement”

    Great video Shawn. I actually hit everything with a slightly closed stance. I still have issues hitting a fade off a driver – but maybe a square stance will help me.

    Are you saying for irons we stick to a square stance – even for a draw?

    Thanks!

    • From Shawn Clement on Major Driver Setup Nugget

      Yes, it was always a square stance for draw with irons;
      Now it’s a bit modified with the woods when the ball is a bit more forward for the draw;

    It is great that you keep thinking about how to improve the swing. It gives you confidence that you incorporate what you teach into your own game. Sometimes golf teachers say “you have to do it this way but I don’t because I am a pro”.
    The angle driver stance is what I did to cure my slice when the ball was my target. It gave that little extra time to square the club face. Then I would get comfortable with it and start pushing it.
    Now the ball is just something in the way of me throwing that club straight down the fairway. I have not hit a slice since.

    Thanks Shawn for the rethink. I’ve struggled with open/square stance draw setup. Fade as you know is more natural for me starting open. Might get a nice consistent purposeful draw. Will let you know. Best regards. J

    Shawn,
    I’ve never had a blister on my lead hand before now. Since using your grip and a firmer grip, I have a blister at the base of my pinkey. Any thoughts, is this ok?

    Thanks

      Sounds like you are holding the club to much at the top, grip down a half inch; friction comes from movement; you are simply not aware of where or when it is moving;

    I have always wondered how lining up square with driver while hitting up on the ball (so on the closing part of the arc) could fit the picture when hitting draw. It always bothered me, but I thought I should trust your decades of knowledge. I have my answer now, it doesn’t fit 🙂
    My driver isn’t progressing as fast as all the other clubs, that might well be the missing piece. I’m either hitting left or not hitting up enough, that alignment correction should allow me to put the ball a little more forward in the stance.
    That video is a massive light bulb. Thanks for that Shawn.

    Same lesson you teach me last week. Close the club face a little bit and you will have a nice
    Draw.

    Many thanks Shawn for the nice winter session.

    By coincidence I was experimenting with my driver stance yesterday. I normally hit a draw with a square stance; so I was pointing more left with my feet and taking the club back a little outside. Had phenomenal shots one after the other, mostly quite straight but a few small fades and even a few small draws. So this is now my plan for finding fairways on narrow holes. Just not getting the carry distance I want yet but I have a lot of work left to implement your system. We’ll get there.

    Does it mean that one would be slightly less open too, when hitting a fade with the driver (than with a 9 iron)?

    • From Shawn Clement on Major Driver Setup Nugget

      You get the idea and it could be less for many people; you will see a few guys on tour doing fades that way like Matt Kuchar and Graeme McDowell; Shawn

      Hi Philip!
      I am now going to go with the flow; Hogan still used the diagonal stance when hitting fades with driver;
      It’s like the one leg drill when hitting a fade; but for me, the penny dropped as I continued down the path of this:
      1-picture
      2-set up matches
      3-feel of the delivery
      4-observation
      And in my observations, there was something about the draw with the driver that just did not feel right. So I stayed with the fades as my go to shot and hit the driver draw when it felt like I needed to use it or felt like it was going well.
      It’s going to be a different season now for sure!! because I FEEL that this was the missing piece and then the conscious mind saw the logic and sealed the deal. Such a sweet challenge this game; what a thrill!

    Hi Shawn. I can stay focus on the target but my brain blacks out once I hinge my wrist. Since hinging the wrist changes the arm club relationship from what it was at address (club now being at a right angle with my arms); my brain can’t predict contact anymore. Actually, I loose track of were the club face is as soon as I hinge. I can cut grass and throw the club find because I don’t need to pick up an object along the way. From my brain perspective, the grass will get cut regardless of when that second pendulum kicks in (early or late) OR club face position. Any advise?

    • From Shawn Clement on Target Focus Confirmation Series

      Ok, good; don’t worry about the club face at all;
      When you whip the club through the grass, you see where it cuts right? You know where the club passes and see the direction of the blur.
      So when the ball is there; whip throw it in the direction you want the ball to go and see how it flies; THEN adjust the face to the flight if need be.

      Thank you for the quick reply. So it all comes down to placing the ball to fit your own swing as no 2 human machines are the same. If it feels right to you then the ball trajectory should meet the picture.

      What we would need to establish is if you have the same ability to whip the club with a bowed wrist at the top like Dustin or Graeme or Brooks. If doing this PREVENTS YOU from whipping the club, like it does with so many of my students, then we need to address that and get you to hinge. As you get better with that way of loading, and consequently get better whipping actions with it , you will not need to worry about it and it will come naturally when you focus on whipping to the target.

      It will evolve!

      Glad to see you address this Shawn. I would like to see more video/discussion on it. The bowed wrist versus hinged wrist is something you touched on in one of your vids but i think it deserves more. I have recently been working on throwing/flinging/whipping the club using both methods and it’s very interesting. One gives me more speed, while the other gives me more accuracy. And then there’s the issue of how well each works in harmony with the right hand. Which is another layer to it.
