    Shawn & Sav:

Great video lesson. So I have been told by you in your lesson in Tampa that I should use the ‘carpenter / hammer” swing. When hitting a nail normally thinks that the hammer hits the nail and then stops. Any positioning swing thoughts to incorporate the hammer swing with unstoppable momentum ? Also congrats on your joining the ‘Golf Channel”! Well deserved. I am thinking you may now be making more trips to Florida. If so, How do I found out if you will be available for more lessons when in Florida? Thanks!

The hammer does get stopped yes, but the nail gets driven into the wood; and when the nail is too long, ot comes out on the other side! This is the Idea!! You want to drive that ball well through the wood and out into the Picture with a nice hefty whip with ease! Shawn

When I think of unstoppable momentum I think of as you showed with the six pound hammer swing something that doesn’t have any added momentum, but when I watch videos of you and your daughter swinging it appears that you are adding swing momentum above the original momentum of the club swinging it’s self with the arm club unit. Is this accomplished through the counter activity of butt turning behind you as you swing through the ball to an unrestricted finish

Correct! When the body has to prepare to get out of the way of the arms falling around the sternal notch and out towards the target, it KICKS THE KINETIC CHAIN INTO ACTION; and this catapults the butt away from the target and releases the arms into the picture. See the sublime “kinetic chain series” of 7 videos; very sweet!!

Hi Shawn, I play fades. I have the target. I have the intermediate point. But my throw/unstoppable momentum is invariably slightly to the left and the ball flight kind of comes back to the line of the intermediate point. Rarely does it start over the intermediate point and then fade. If I play a draw, it starts from the intermediate point and NOT to the right of it.

Your side vision is still very much influencing you; do some goldie locks with ball position where you play the ball between center and the back foot-get behind it and feel like the ball is going to go 30 yards right of the Intermediate Point; SEND IT THERE WITH NICE MOMENTUM and see if it really goes there. Then let us know! 😀👍

When you implement this teaching in combination with the Flow State series, magic happens. For me, my golf game has entered a zen-like state. Complete inner peace and a deep joy for the game that I have never experienced.

    Hi Shawn,

Do you have any guidance regarding grip size? As long as I’ve played I’ve had issues with the grip feeling awkward in my hand. I tend to have/want to milk it a bit and rarely quite get perfectly comfortable.

I’ve played standard my entire life and recently started experimenting with a midsize grip on one of my irons.

    Thanks,
    Jamie

    • From Shawn Clement on Grip Update

Hey Jamie; the grip size you want to choose is the one you can CLAMP DOWN THE HARDEST ON with the lead hand. Interlocking geips need a bit bigger as well; if glove size is Large or XL, you will probably need mid size. See the last 5 minutes of my oldie but goodie video called “grip and wrist hinge shawn clement” on youtube.

You talk a lot about strain level when swinging. I can’t seem to get over wanting to hit the ball, what would be a good drill for this. Also being 70 years old how do you feel about a closed stance.

This pertains to what is going on just before you swing the club; see “pre-motor cortex” series of videos on premium as well as “great driver nugget” and “Diagonal stance series” for your closed stance! Also have a new senior series that came out during the holidays that you will enjoy tremendously; We got your back! 😀👍

I notice there is a lifting on your back swing and a squatting on the downswing and lifting at the follow through.which I get for the purpose of “grass” cutting. How do you quantify this in your swing–how much up, how much down? I’ve played golf 50 years-with 10 years of that range being unable to play due to non golf related back issues. I fight the classic over the top and sometimes fat the hell out of some shots way behind the ball. You can imagine that seeing additional vertical movement in the swing scares the crap out of me. Can you expand or tell me how you gauge the amount of vertical change (up-squatting-up) you incorporate in your swing? I know Hogan said there is about a 2 inch sit down motion on the downswing. My clubhead speed can get around 110-111 mph. I know I cannot judge 2 inches on a downswing

This is precisely what is wrong with golf instruction today; the “be careful” and “watch out” or else attitude and we have all been brainwashed into that “blind logic”
The fact of the matter is that your machine works at 40 Million bits of info per second and is way more precise than you think! We need to walk this way every day! The up will never go to hyperextension and the down will never go to strain when you let things happen as the machine is self preserving. See “pumping up the swing” video on premium. Your machine has your back, big time! Just stick to a simple task with a prediction and it will do just fine. If I say “don’t hit the ground behind the ball”, what do you see-feel-hear? And when I say feel-see-hear a whipping cut through a dandelion stem along the grass towards the target, isn’t that different! All you need to do is hold in your mind what you want to experience!

Hey Shawn! Couple questions. Does Sav raise her hands ala Nancy Lopez just before her backswing? Also, I cant seem to keep my left hand grip (I’m right handed) from sliding from the umbrella start to the palm of my left hand? I just did a half hour of half swings with no problem but cannot stop it from sliding on the full swing??

      Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on UNSTOPPABLE MOMENTUM

Love Nancy Lopez! Yes, she has the same engagement in the swing which is a kind of brace as she mini heaves the arm-club unit into her backswing; as for the grip; pretend the grip is a water hose and you are clamping down on it With the lead hand to stop the circulation or flow of water; literally crimping the shaft under the grip. Then do perpetual motion with it and hold it with the pressure required so that nothing comes apart.

I find that people get in trouble with the grip when they are trying to “place” the grip in a “perceived” part of the hand they saw from a demonstration of a painted glove. The main goal is to make the club a part of you and use the hand in a way that allows you to compress through the ball. Feels just like holding brass knuckles actually!

Hi Shawn. Alvin here from Sunny Singapore. Just submitted my first video and watch all your suggestions. Haven’t had time to go the the range but have practised some of the suggestions at home without the ball. Have got an early game tmr and whilst I know I am probably not supposed to use all the suggestions immediately without going to the range first. However, it’s just a friendly game so who cares….am gonna do so.

Few points for all non believers in your coaching.

    1) I signed up for eagle membership on the 20th of Feb 2020. Bettered my best score of 95 by 8 strokes few days later with an 87. Following day played a 92 which was still way better and played another game of 90. All better than my previous best.

    2) Submitted my first video few days ago, practised Shawns’s suggestions today, my swing speed went from normal of about 95-97 to 102-104. This was measured using the Super sonic x10. It’s probably not a true representation of swing speed but it does show an increase. Pretty amazing.

    Thanks a million Shawn.

Hi Shawn, I have had some great success following your video analysis of my swing a couple of weeks back. PB on 7i and driver distances today at the range.
One issue I keep having is hitting the driver high on the face. The ball goes straight but high like a wedge. I have been doing some practice today in the backyard with tees, just trying to hit the top. Any other suggestions?

    • From Shawn Clement on Consistency Series

Being aware of the blur of club and the lowest point of the blur while clipping those tees; then when you get to the ball, you see the tee and where the top of it is and match the arc of the blur to it and make sure that blur is THROUGH IT and out over the IP.
Great stuff on the benchmarks, lets go get the next set!

  • From [email protected] on Lead Hand Release

I think I sent this query, but I didnt see your answer. I read that Sav prefers to think of a leading hand frisbee throw to initiate the kinetic chain and mimic a release. I havent seen you address this directly. What are the advantages and disadvantages of that analogy? Thank you for all you are doing to clarify this heretofore poorly taught sport

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Lead Hand Release

Yes, because she is playing to her backhand, it is a very sound task-analogy-feel for her; we have evolved to a tennis 2 hand backhand or a baseball swing which is more complete as it includes both sides and forces the body to clear more to the target to accommodate the trail arm and prevent any collapse of the lead arm in the process. So many players on tour with this same way of going about things!

  • From [email protected] on Lead Hand Release

Hi Shawn. I am wondering if you release the lead hand any differently between hitting a draw and a fade? I currently am struggling with blocking a lot of my shots out to the right, so I am definitely not releasing the club properly. I want to initially concentrate on drawing my shots, but I was wondering if you purposely restrict your release ( rolling of the lead wrist ) when hitting a fade? Thanks so much for everything. Your videos are amazing!

    Go to comment
    • From Shawn Clement on Lead Hand Release

The answer is no; no restrictions whatsoever; however, as a direct result of you releasing fully in the direction you want the ball to start, with the picture in your mind of it fading back to the target with the ball position slightly forward of center instead of back of center, you get the results naturally. Full abandon, full release, no holding on. Club face might need to be 2 degrees more open than with a draw, which is way less open than most would use when fading the ball!

Shawn are you feeling that the club face is falling toward the target line or your hands? In other words is it the first lever or the second Lever that you’re predicting?
