  • From [email protected] on Purpose of the Backswing

Just what I needed currently. I played S&T for years and had fallen back into keeping my right arm against my side. I also had recently lost a club distance in the irons and noticed I was not letting the left wrist hinge. Both related.

Found the drill I was looking for. “Get to the end of the kinetic chain- off season training (6)”. A great drill. I find it helps to use the paint brush to obtain the snap release. Really a good one.
Glad I found it. Now in my favored list

Would it be good practice hit the ball AND throw the club? All in the same swing.
    Thanks,

That would be too much to manage for most, because you are either collecting a ball from where it lies and releasing it into the direction of flight OR throwing the club towards a target through the intermediate point.

    Hey Shawn
Just watched your YouTube driver video in which you put white Lines on the top of the driver head.
What do you use for those white lines and is it legal to leave those white lines on the driver head if you are playing in competition?
Thanks and that was a very informative video because I find myself hitting closer to the toe so I am looking forward to utilizing this methodology to help correct that and make sure I hit more center hit shots
    Thanks

  • From Emilio Lazcano on Walk Cut Strike

Hi Shawn, three months ago, I started to learn golf with an instructor from my local driving range. I hit the wall well, but I didn’t feel comfortable doing it. My instructor doesn’t let me move my body at all, only my arms. Now that I see your videos, I’m trying to change my swing to your style because it feels good and natural. I practice these drills, but I fail to hit the ball well when doing this swing in the driving range. What could be the problem?

Hi Emilio; not a concern at all; you just need some solid references to get your bearings. See “blur of club” and “grass whip training” as a great task training. Then see “the goldie locks series” and the “throwing the club” and “throwing series” and predict that contact! 😀👍

Great drill Shawn. During today’s practice, when I was doing this drill, I was getting at least a 1/2 to full club length more distance. It was very surprising to me but a great feeling. However, I couldn’t quite get the ball compression I felt in the drill in my regular swing. When doing the drill I seem to feel more momentum and direction to intermediate target than with my regular swing. I’m still pretty new to your coaching site, so I will continue working on it. Thank you so much for the great content and teaching. I started out watching you on YouTube and using your drills. I saw so much improvement in my ball striking that I joined your premium site. Well worth it!!!

    Hey Shawn,

A few questions for you. After drawing the ball for my entire golf career – 50 years, I can now hit it both ways thanks to you and actually prefer the fade these days. I have noticed that my scoring is much better early in the round than later and I think this is caused by me playing totally by feel starting out. I have a task – flight and location for the shot. Today was a perfect example – hit driver right where I wanted to today – over trees with a fade, chip and birdie. Birdied par 3 #2, then as the round wore on, I found myself trying to fix things and wondering what went “wrong” with a shot. Then I start having rabbit ears and things fall off the tracks

The real question is, when you are playing well and then get technical during a round, how do you get it back? We waited on every shot today and I struggle with this and my mind wanders and I can not seem to get it back. I play best when I am just reacting – picking out tasks/targets and hitting shots.

I would love to hear your comments about how to put the train back on the tracks after it derails and is in the woods 🙂

Wanted to mention that I do what you said – I do not hit fades and draws with a technical thought, It is more of a task – hit a draw or fade and then just doing it. When I get technical then you bring in the occasional double cross.

    Thanks,

    Andy

Hey Andy! Yes, this is very common when trying to “protect” your good rounds when you start playing better than your comfort zone. This is definitely between the ears and something many players on tour constantly seek and this is why you hear the cliché of “one shot at a time.
1-choose a shot flight plan you are comfortable with for that particular shot; something that would not have you release towards trouble and invite unnecessary tension in the swing.
2-be comfortable over the shot (you did your predictions based on your task to target)
3-what will this feel like when you let that unstoppable momentum go into that direction?
      4-witness
You cannot get to the next step without the previous one being sound.
Do you see something in this process that was missing for you or is this what you are doing?

Well there are a few things here. One issue I have had is moving from 50 years of draw to fade, but I think I am OK with that now – I do as you said – do not aim at trouble playing the shot, I favor a side to take into account a slight fade. I can also draw it if I need to, but the draw is less controllable.

I do have a plan – flight path and target, but there seems to be two stages for me. 1) The start of the round where I have thought about the round heading in and I do not think at all, I just react. 2) Once the crap creeps in and I have to get #1 back. It seems for #2 I am almost trying to force something (which I guess I am). That is the thing where I struggle at times

There is a #3 when mechanical swing thought appear and that is the worst thing for me.

The tell tale sign that I am no longer in situation #1 is I get rabbit ears and hear/see everything. For Sunday’s round what knock me from #1 was hitting a perfect shot that was 1 club too much and I think that stuck in my head and rather than accepting it and moving on, I was second guessing the club selection (which does nothing for that round). I should have made a mental note that I was hitting the ball well that day and moved on.

Sounds like you are narrowing things down actually; your management decisions of what shots to hit are meant to keep the stress away from your execution. See how well you do with that in the next couple rounds!

  • From Sean Lensborn on IMPORTANT UPDATE OF TASK! SEND DANDELION STEM TO TARGET!

Okay, so quick update here. I have been playing some of the best golf of my life as of late – with the exclusion of my driver. I still feel like a complete head case with the driver…as soon as it touches my hands, something seems to break in my brain. lol. One of my buddies suggested I see a sports psychologist 😀

I have resigned myself to playing a 4 iron or 4 wood off the tee, and just playing a tee set up, and have been shooting in the low to mid 70s.

On the driving range, this video and the favourite drill – driver, have been mainstays for me. I usually alternate between clipping the tee with no ball, then hitting a ball and really try to send the tee on my intended target line. I largely have no issue doing this on the range. It’s certainly not always perfect, but, I feel confident with it on the range. I am purposeful about lining up with a target on the range. I go through my normal preshot routine. I’m playing with normal tees off matts where the tee goes in and pops out easy, so I have to go get the tee again and start the routine over each time.

However, on a tee box…even if I am playing by myself, as a practice round, with no real consequence of a bad outcome, I am almost certain one of three things will happen: I top the ball, I block it about 50 yards right, or I duck hook the ball.

    help!

Hey Shawn – so, helped a bit on the range, ball came out a lot lower but often was center of the face and solid. That being said, I noticed I was still hitting some almost ‘drop kick’ top type shots, and as you mention in that video, if you’re swaying, you end up doing that. I recorded myself quickly and noticed I am swaying a bit with the driver.

I went back to the ‘feet together’ and ‘1 foot’ drills with my 7 iron and was topping some balls…spent the rest of that session on those drills and my left oblique is sore today! Guess I let that slip away from me. I’ll spend a couple more sessions on that and then get back to the driver. Any videos you can point me at to eliminate sway on the driver beyond those two drills?

Yes, see the “walking drill” and then the “kinetic chain facilitation series” #5 or #6 which is the walking and sending divot peels into the trees. With the driver it’s tee tips being sent! Just an amazing drill.

When I lose my swing, like currently, I finish the round with feet together. I lose a club but it is super straight. I have also finished the round on one leg but not quite as straight. I will have to see if the staggered feet give me the same benefit. I would play forever with feet together but downhill lies are a killer.

  • From Charles Martin on MATCH BACKSWING TO BALL DIRECTION

Shawn, You mentioned you used heavier shafts in your fairway woods to help with momentum.
It seems that heavier shafts and clubs in general best fit your model to allow gravity to do the work with unstoppable momentum. Correct? Or am I missing something? Manufacturers seem to make clubs lighter for older players. Help me understand why? Easier to manipulate? Something else?

    • From Shawn Clement on MATCH BACKSWING TO BALL DIRECTION

Hi Charley, sorry I missed this one! Manufacturers are making lighter to allow the golfer to whip the club easier. But if too light and too flexible, then you lose that tracking ability. A good balance between dynamic weight and strength of the individual.

  • From Knut Herzog on Lead Hand Release

Question for the lead and trail hand release. When I do the lead hand drill, I can really feel the club pulling me forward into a nice finish position. With the trail hand drill the pulling is much less but noticeable. But as soon as I put both hands on the club, I do not feel any pulling. This might be one of the reasons why I don’t get into a proper finfish position from time to time. Any idea what to do?
    Thanks,

Hi David! Start with this video on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDLs2SC-yQE then go to the “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”, “release fine tuning”, “snap release polish” and “draw fine tuning” videos. Then see “driver nugget” and the “diagonal stance series driver draw”. You will then have the full picture and what you need to feel! 👍😀

    • From Chris Cotton on Shawn's Favourite Drill - Driver

Hey Shawn! I’ve been struggling with a block slice with the driver. I watched the first video you recommended to David, and believe my issue is that the face isn’t closed enough, but I still have an inside-out swing. Could this be a cause? I also struggle with hitting the top of the ball on my tee shots – driver or 3 wood. With driver, I make sure not to address the club behind the ball.. but sometimes I feel like on my downswing I default to the ball. Something I can’t get my head wrapped around.

At the end of my range session I changed my grip to hammer “down”, and then tilted to send the shot into the picture. When I do this, I feel like my forearms are contorted too much.. but maybe that’s just me not being used to sending the shot into the picture.

FWIW – I’m having great success with wedges and irons. I love your methods as they’re all natural movements. Keep up the amazing work!

      Thanks!

Hey Chris! If you are still coming from the inside but the ball still goes right it can only be the club face. For you and Tom, turn the driver upside down and do the “lead hand release” and “trail hand release” videos and perform this before every drive; this is how Mu was able to translate his big block slices and turn them into crazy long straight draws. And he has to crank the face closed big time-just close it and disregard the look of it until you get a straight flight. If you guys look at the “most overlooked detail with driver shawn clement” video on youtube I did a few weeks back, you really realize that for many, the driver needs to be closed much more because of the upward blow. Keep the strain level very low as well so that the weight of the clubhead can release you fully.

Thanks Shawn! I think the trail hand release is what did it for me. I watch the videos and understand the concepts, but you can’t really grasp it until you actually do the drill! Looks and feels are totally different! I’m not getting nearly enough width with my trail arm.. definitely collapsing and getting stuck on the inside. I’m still going to close the face more, but I believe I was WAY too inside-out.

Hey Shawn! I have one more follow up (sorry to bog down this thread!). Today was the best I hit the driver in months. My power fade was working very well at the range. I took a video and noticed that I’m still quick with my swing.. definitely more width though.

What I also noticed is that I’m squatting way too early.. I start to squat and catch the ground as my backswing is finishing. My “load” in the back swing is a squat.. would this force me to pop up out of the shot? hence the tops off the tee here and there? Or is the early squat ok? I’m all self taught (besides your channel – no in person lessons) so my understanding of the “mechanics” isn’t great.

      Thanks!

Big giant dittos for me….as I read this I realized I have a similar problem! It seems like my right side can not get through enough and I end up going around more than through.
I’ve not yet tried to throw a driver (it has a graphite shaft) but I suspect the longer club has something to do with this as it feels like the trail side can not release at the same time or maybe as easily as the lead side and is restricting me from a full release.
My arms feel kind of contorted or restricted from experiencing the same feel I get with the irons.

The 10 finger grip is EVERY BIT AS VALID AS ALL OTHER GRIPS. Very anatomically sound and just transferred someone this morning from an interlocking grip that did not work at all for them to a superb 10 finger grip.

Hi Norman! The release point is well past the ball and well towards the direction you want to start the ball past the low point of the arc which of course for all clubs except the driver is in front of the ball by a couple inches…see the “lead hand release”, “trail hand release”. ‘Release fine tuning” and “snap release polish” videos for starters and then see “kinetic chain facilitation series” and my favourite is the walking and releasing divots into the trees one which I think is #5 or #6. Enjoy!
