Hi Shawn,
Thanks for all your videos and comments.
I have a question about your foot alignment on your video. It seems that you are not aligned to the target but slightly to the left of the intermediate point (ie the direction in which the ball start) right? Idem for draw, are your feet aligned more to the right?
Thank your for your help.
Hi Alexandre!
For fade, we line up in the direction we want to start the ball and let the ball fade back to the end target, ball slightly forward of centre. If we line up square to the target, we have to swing into the body to start left and this is not good for width of swing through the ball.
for Draw, with irons, we line up on the target, play the ball slightly back of centre and then release to the right of the end target and let it draw back to the target. It is tge ball position that influences alignment.
Thanks! So as I tend to align myself to the target line for fades, I often end up finishing slightly to the right, which actually makes sense, as long as the dispersion stays reasonable.
To correct this, I sometimes overemphasize the outside-in club path, which ends up increasing the fade even more. When I try to compensate by adjusting my hand position at impact, I either pull the shot (if the face stays open) or hook it with massive compression (if I close it).
I’ll try to work on that in my next practice session.
Also, I was wondering if there’s a video that helps to better understand the radar figures and what they represent. If not, it could be a great idea to create one ^^ especially useful for winter training sessions.
Again, thanks a lot for your reactivity
Good feedback thanks!
remember that the fade arc and the draw arc are very similar. Don’t try to MANUFACTURE the fade, let the momentum of the swing perform all the work.
Shawn, I’ve got a pretty fundamental question that has been bugging me for a long time. A fade IS over-the-top and an out-to-in path…. right? For context, I know how to draw the ball, but with the ball position back of centre i actually find myself chunking it (ground before ball) from time to time, even though i remind myself to stay with the shot and commit to the arc blur passing right of IP – I think it is a levels issue (any thoughts?). Conversely, I find it way easier to play a fade – ball more forward, I almost feel like swiping across the ball to the left of IP and I can put in a good whip/sling, but it DEFINITELY feels OTT to me. Is that supposed to be the way, or am I getting this wrong?
Hi Shing! Sorry I missed this post! This is why we practice doing both fades and draws to keep the swing balanced. Sounds like your draw swing was coming too much from the inside and or you were getting ahead of the ball and having to reach back and chunking it and the ball more forward is accommodating you moving forward. Also, when hitting a fade, the downswing gets more supported as it has to stay left. You are on the right track here and things will continue to improve as you stay with both. You can play the draw position a bit more forward and hit high draws from a centre-slightly forward position too to help bridge the gap!
Hi Shawn,
for the fade, if the IP is aimed at the flag, I setup slight left of IP and I swing left of the ip ( which is more or less where I am setup anyway), but there is a 15 yard diff in the ball carry between the fade and the draw ( draw going longer). Any insights, where I could be wrong, you all tend to hit the same carry distance between the draw and fade.
Fade is one club less on short irons and wedges; 1/2 club short of mid irons and same distance on long irons and woods (5 to Driver)
Makes absolute sense… thank you.
In a video I heard you mention, that many end up aiming straight and I am one of those. As all my life I struggled with over the top, ball position way forward of center, always hoping to get good contact (target was never even an option for me) my shot would be aiming straight and I went through my share of slices with the long clubs and got great at chipping as I was never on the green. When I came across your videos on how a closed face squares up and tilted behind the ball like a lumber jack, and more recently moved my ball position back not quite center yet as 25 years of muscle memory I have suddenly stopped thinking about getting good contact, it just happens now. At this stage does every shot I hit, do I try and shape it (fade or draw) instead of straight?
ALWAYS PLAN TO SHAPE IT! 👊👍
Hey Shawn….Why do we play the ball forward for a fade and back for a draw?
Because of the nature of the arc of the swing; see all the “arc-blur” videos and the “working the ball” videos towards the bottom of the list of videos by date. THEN FEEL THE PROPER BALL POSITION with the “goldie locks series” You can have the ball a hair forward of centre on a draw but you will realize quickly that it better be a high draw (otherwise you will be getting a pull draw) and if the ball is centre or a hair back of centre on a fade, you better be aiming a lot left (as a right hand player) because you will be getting what we call a “push fade”
