Wisdom in Golf Premium

  • From john simms on Greenside Bunkers

    Hi Shawn
I was wondering what the weight distribution is on green side bunker shots. Conventional wisdom on the golf channel is 70/30 or so on your left side. It didn’t seem that your weight distribution changed at all on your bunker shots. I want your analysis, not the gold channel’s

  • From Brian Murphy on Kinetic Chain - Part 7

Shawn, this entire series is eye opening. I realized this at the range when i felt my kinetic chain not engaing properly (i was squatting in the back swing and coming up in the downswing).Once i understood this, i really started to focus and hit some flush shots that felt effortless. thank you.

  • From Chris Whitbread on Feet Together Drill

I tried with feet together then then about 1 1/2 feet apart. It feels I use mostly my arms but i and getting about 215 yards with a driver with range balls. I struggle to get over 200 yards trying the full swing. Also I feel my arms are not so high and swing around my body. Tempted to do a full round this way. Just a bit confused why I can get more distance using mostly my arms. I do feel there’s more of a whip at impact using mostly my arms. Just a little bit stuck at the moment. Thanks. Chris.

Go ahead and play a round feet together and knees together. Let momentum whip the arms through that arc blur into a nice snap release into the direction of the intermediate point. It feels like all arms but it is not. If you feel a nice whip, that is easy to produce, that leads to a nice release snap (see important release update video) then you are good!

  • From Phuong D on How To Go From a Weak Grip to a Strong Grip

    Shawn,

I think a cool continuation of this video would be a video on how the relationship between alignment and that tilt to get behind the ball (as you were doing in this video) affects the club face. One of the current problems I feel like in struggling with is the view of the club face when I’m aligning left for a fade and the club face looks like it’s hooking way too far to the left but when I get a good strike, it either hooks or slices but the face is closed. Do you have any videos you would recommend to remedy this? Thank you!

  • From Brad Hoffman on 20 - 40 - 60 Yard Shots to Full Swing Mastery

I find this to be really effective with mid-irons too. I’ve only used them for 3/4 swings with the ball in the middle of my stance. I feel like it’s worth some “Goldilocks” at the range. Am I crazy or is this an effective precursor to the full swing?

I love the concept about this drill but it feels very uncomfortable getting my hands further away from my body. I think this is something I need to work on as I have been hitting the toe of the club with everything and I wonder if it’s because I’m not keeping my head behind the ball throughout the swing as you describe in this video. The result of my ball flight are indicating I am not releasing towards the target and am pulling way left. I almost feel as if I need to start learning to hit the ball all over again as I am struggling and losing confidence which is perpetuating the problem. Any drill suggestions to help me get my swing path and release in order?

Hi Brad! Sorry I missed this one! We were in the middle of an update to the whole site and things got lost. Yes, if you feel that you need more room for the right elbow, like in the “football drill series” and you have been hitting off the toe, this would represent a big change for you. The key is what allows you to stay with the blur of club through ball and intermediate point into the direction of flight! If what you do now does not allow for that, then we do need to take a step back to take 2 steps forward. Jim Furyk has had an amazing career with being close to the ball with a collapsed arm club unit to fit around his body, and you can see in Lee Westwood’s swing as well as Jake Knap’s swing, that collapsed through impact can still perform at the highest level so this is not a must either. It is whatever allows you to deliver through the ball and IP into the flight plan consistently.

When I do this, I struggle to see the blur. Is that an indicator of too much strain? Maybe old(er) eyes?

Great job Shawn! I also appreciate your feedback for and from the 2 comments below. Having been a “hitter” at the ball it’s challenging to get the swing out of the ground but with you I know I can do better.
