Adding to David’s question… I do this same thing, because I think it makes my arms less likely to extend under the centrifugal force of the swing, contributing to my tendency to hit towards the hosel.
That said, Shawn’s last tip to use the two ball drill may negate this and the issue was probably more to do with early extension. I would still like to know Shawn’s answer to David’s question though!
There you go Phil! Use the feel of David and go through your 2 objects with it! Good stuff!
Well, it seems to be working. I just hit some 8 irons on the SkyTrack easy target game and averaged 0 yards offline (the worst was 5 yards offline), got the tiniest dispersion circle I’ve ever seen. Smash factor isn’t great yet (1.17 to 1.25, average 1.21) but I’m making much better contact and spin numbers are healthy.
My launch angle is very high though, still (24.5 vs a tour pro 18.1) – I’m not expecting to hit tour pro numbers, but I’m guessing it’s still a bit high and that I need to get that loft down somewhat if I want more yardage – I’m only getting 130 carry, which I can live with if the dispersion is this good, but more is better!!
Any videos that I should look at for controlling launch angle and how long should I spend working on the two ball drill for better compression (or is it the same answer!)
Hi Shawn, I’m hoping this is the correct venue to ask questions. I left a comment the other day without a response. I’ve always had a long backswing with a soft left arm I was taught that way and I absolutely despise it! How can I work on straightening my left arm at the top of the backswing? I feel like I have the grip correct and even feel like it sets at the top but when I review it on video the left arm is no where it feels and it still looks very relaxed or broken down. Sometimes I feel like I try to make it another lever for my swing. I know that’s not good. I look forward to your comments. LOVE THE SITE.
Regards, TF
Hey TF! Let me know where the other comment is and I will go answer; sometimes get buried with emails and they fall through the cracks!
Let arm action is best done with the Sword drill; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2k6QOcAQrk8
Use the lead arm to work on this and you will get it ironed out in no time; it is all about finishing the backswing turn and it is ok with a slight bend, no worries there!

Hi Shawn – Relating to Width/Structure (i think), do you have any premium videos expanding on the connection videos on YouTube (Getting Stuck? Want Consistent Connection? & Connection and Getting Stuck)? I’m trying to confirm a feeling I have at address as ‘real’ or ‘crazy’ 🙂 At address as my final pre-shot step, I extend straight out in front of me the arm/club unit so that it feels like my left arm/pit is “on top” of my pec or “in front” of my chest slightly. This sorta feels like your arms are coming out of your sleeves a bit. This gives my arms more freedom and usually yields in good shots. When I dont consciously get my left arm on top / in front and it stays more ‘along side’ the chest, it tends to feel more restricted / stuck and yields in over draws / hooks. Is this real or in my head? 🙂
Thanks for any insights! David
Sorry I missed this David; was under the weather back then! 😝🤢
Yes, exactly right and that is a great feel to use; I feel the same thing when fully engaged and ready to swing with full width; the football drill got me there and I love it!
No problem at all! I tend to couple this feel with one swing thought “lead with the right elbow”. Starting he downswing with the right elbow first seems critical in keep the structure of your arm/club unit, retains your lag and shallows the club so you aren’t steep into the ball. I know the kinematic sequence doesn’t really start down with the elbow but it’s a good thing to remember your right elbow does need to move – your hands shouldn’t move it (I think!)
Other address thought here is “left arm over shirt logo” – is that a good way to think about this address position?
If you feel that this will allow you to finish your backswing fully and give you the ability to whip the club with a nice velocity and a lot of ease, then go for it! Shawn
